  • How do I maintain my Handpan?
Never let someone play with your handpan if they are wearing a metal ring, bracelets, a long necklace or even a belt buckle. The smallest scratch can have big consequences…Every time you (or a friend) play your instrument, take the time to wipe it with a microfiber cloth on both sides of the case. Don’t forget that the interior also needs a little attention from time to time.Dryness is a virtue: never put your handpan in a case while it is damp. By the way, never put your instrument in a damp case.Take the time to create a cleaning routine , especially if you live near the sea or in a humid environment. For a complete, simple and pictorial overview of the routine that I recommend, consult the guide complete cleaningto keep your little pearl free of nasty brown stains. How to store your handpan at homeYour handpan needs to breathe, so don't leave it locked in a bag or case for too long. There is an exception, however, if you live very close to a place loaded with salt air: in this case, put it in a hard case or a cabinet with a humidity absorber. Ensure that the storage area and the handpan are both thoroughly dry, otherwise the rusting process will be accelerated.Do not store it in a place near a heat source, such as a radiator or fireplace.Never store it upside down. If too long pressure is applied to the ding, then it may go out of tune. If you really need to turn it over (for example when cleaning it) use a blanket, beanbag or other thick, soft accessory. There are lots of ways to keep your handpan safe - like a handpan wall mounting hook (I recommend the ones from HardCase Technologies and this one created by Artful Steel), a dedicated instrument storage shelf, or a stand ( foot) for handpan provided that it is protected from potential blows. There are also “homemade” alternatives, for example with certain Ikea shelves which have storage space large enough to accommodate your handpan, accompanied by cushions for them to rest on.Finally, last option, simply place it on a solid table with a sheet underneath. If you know how to knit, you can even make your own handpan mat, which can be used for both storage and playing. A friend of a friend of mine gets his used clothing fabric and it works perfectly! When you wear your handpan, grip it firmly by the inside of the Gu or preferably move it in its case. Go slowly and anticipate potentially dangerous places or areas that could damage your instrument. At all times, be particularly attentive to children, animals... and clumsy adults! 😅 How to take care of your handpan outdoorsNo matter your destination, a strong and reliable case is absolutely crucial to keeping your handpan safe. I recommend the Evatek case (which I personally use), Namana and Panji bags.If you are going on a short trip and away from crowds, a soft case will be sufficient, but ideally the most effective is always the hard case.Planes and handpans don't mix, yet I managed to travel the world thanks to these cases and my handpans are still intact. If you want to know everything about how to fly with your handpan, here is the essential guide. To ensure additional protection, take time to apply a little oil, for example Phoenix oil, before leaving the house.Being in the middle of nature with your handpan is magical, but be careful because it comes with its share of “dangers”. I wrote a complete article on how to protect your handpan from heat and cold, but here in summary are the 4 essential elements to keep in mind:🌿 The earthIf you need to temporarily place your handpan on the ground, do a quick scan of the surface to avoid gravel, protruding pieces of wood, pieces of glass, or anything that could scratch the bottom shell or part of the Gu. Use a handpan mat (see above) or add clothing. If the ground/grass is wet or damp, use a waterproof mat, waterproof clothing or, failing that, a plastic bag. That being said, the ideal is to always put it back in its case rather than on the ground.💨 The airHumidity is our enemy! So, be generous with your use of a microfiber to keep your handpan dry. Cold itself is not dangerous, but it can temporarily affect the tuning of your instrument before returning to its normal temperature. If it's exceptionally cold, wet and you want to play in the snow (after all why not!), be sure to dry it well afterward with a quality cloth.🔥 FireIf you accidentally leave your handpan in the sun (ouch), move it into the shade until it cools down so you can play it again. Heat stretches the metal and affects its tension, so playing it while hot can permanently affect its tuning.💧 WaterOK, it's wonderful to play in the rain or by a lake, but water is a potential enemy of your handpan. Keep your case closed and dry at all times. After playing, wipe down each side and inside with a microfiber cloth. If your handpan has a foam or paper rim protector, make sure it is also dry before putting it back on. Next, make sure your bag is completely dry before storing your instrument inside.🏖️ The beachThe beach is certainly one of the most magical places to play with your handpan. See the sun setting on the horizon, feel the wind caressing your face, playing to the rhythm of the waves... is it okay, did I make you dream there? End clap, this is certainly the worst environment for your handpan. The air is loaded with salt, humidity, the heat doesn't help anything and to top it all off, the grains of sand , not only do they get everywhere, but they can also slightly scratch your instrument... in short, it's a real accumulation of harmful factors for your handpan. The crucial element is therefore to ensure that your case remains perfectly dry. Do not open it or expose it to salty air for more than a few seconds. Wipe your handpan regularly and scrupulously as previously indicated. Repeat the operation several times if you stay there for a long period of time. As soon as you get home, do a heavy cleaning with alcohol to remove any salt or sand residue. And then be sure to wash your cloths. There you go, we've done the tour. If you keep these little tips in mind and regularly apply these maintenance rules, you should have a beautiful, shiny handpan that will always be well tuned for years to come!
